The place
#### Mürren's Sunny Terrace: Facing the Giants of the Alps Mürren, a true sun-facing balcony, opens majestically onto the alpine trio of Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau. The path crosses pastures and viewpoints such as Bryndli, before passing sturdy refuges such as the Rotstockhütte to reach Sefinenfurgge, an impressive pass that heralds the entrance to the Kiental valley. #### Waterfalls and Panoramas of Lauterbrunnen Between towering peaks and thundering waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen proves to be a spectacle of nature. The Staubbachfall waterfall, with a 300-metre free fall, is the highest in Switzerland. The valley is also one of the country's largest nature reserves. Take the steep trail from the station that winds into the forest and climbs to 200 metres altitude, then follow the beautiful path up towards the Louwibach stream and along the Staubbach, before crossing other streams and reaching Mürren. #### Mürren: Historic Hamlet and Preserved Nature Mürren, a former Walser settlement, sits at the foot of the Schilthorn, famous for having served as a setting for the James Bond film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. Free of motorised traffic, it is the highest year-round inhabited village in the Canton of Bern, standing at 1,650 metres. After crossing the meadows and taking the zigzag trail up to Bryndli, continue towards Sefinenfurgge via the Rotstock refuge. The trail intensifies between Hundshoren, Hundsee and Horen, offering a striking spectacle at the top: a breathtaking view of the Schilthorn, the Kiental valley and the Blüemlisalp mountain. #### Descent to Griesalp: End of the Epic Adventure After about 500 metres of elevation loss, the steep descent gives way to a brilliant green meadow. Follow the stream and skirt the waterfall to reach upper Dürreberg in about an hour. Continue on the gravel road passing lower Dürreberg and arrive at Griesalp an hour later, marking the end of the demanding trail from Lauterbrunnen to the Kiental valley and its fantastic panoramas.
Why go
L'étape débute dans la vallée glaciaire de Lauterbrunnen, célèbre pour ses 72 cascades, avant de grimper au village sans voitures de Mürren, berceau du ski slalom moderne. Le sentier passe par la cabane du Rotstock (2039 m), qui offre une vue panoramique sur la Jungfrau et le Mönch, avant d'atteindre le col de la Sefinenfurgge (2612 m), le plus haut col rencontré sur cette portion de la Via Alpina. La descente mène au hameau alpin de Griesalp, resté à l'écart du tourisme intensif de la région de la Jungfrau.
Detailed route
Depuis Lauterbrunnen, le sentier grimpe d'environ 800 m jusqu'à Mürren (option train pour éviter cette montée), puis traverse des alpages jusqu'à la cabane du Rotstock. Suit une montée raide sur éboulis jusqu'au col de la Sefinenfurgge, sécurisée par une corde fixe. La descente s'effectue par un long escalier de marches en bois à travers un paysage de roche noire et d'éboulis, avant de rejoindre les petites fermes alpines puis le hameau de Griesalp.
A bit of history
La Via Alpina est un projet européen lancé en 1999 par l'association GTA Grenoble et officialisé en 2000, réunissant les acteurs publics et privés de huit pays alpins. Le sentier a bénéficié de financements du Fonds européen de développement régional entre 2001 et 2008, et un protocole d'accord a été signé en 2005 dans le cadre de la Convention alpine.
Getting there
Un téléphérique relie Stechelberg à Gimmelwald puis à Mürren, permettant de raccourcir l'étape d'environ 3 heures et 800 m de dénivelé pour les randonneurs souhaitant éviter la première montée. Un service de bus dessert également la vallée de Lauterbrunnen.
Recommended gear
L'ascension du col de la Sefinenfurgge se fait sur un terrain d'éboulis raide, équipé d'une corde fixe dans certains passages, avec un escalier en bois aménagé côté descente ; de bonnes chaussures de randonnée à tige montante et un pied sûr sont nécessaires sur cette section technique.
