The place
The Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne (HRP) is the wildest and most demanding of the three great Pyrenean crossings. Over roughly 800 km, it links Hendaye (Atlantic) to Banyuls-sur-Mer (Mediterranean), staying as close as possible to the ridgeline and the Franco-Spanish border, often crossing over to the Spanish side. Not continuously waymarked, it requires map-reading and route-finding skills in complex terrain, off marked paths. It strings together high-altitude passes (often above 2,500 m), rocky plateaus, late-lying snow patches and rarely visited wild valleys. A route for seasoned, self-sufficient hikers who are comfortable in the mountains.
Why go
Breche de Roland and the Cirque de Gavarnie. Vignemale (3,298 m), the highest summit entirely within France. Ordesa and Monte Perdido valleys (Spanish side). Posets and Aneto seen up close. Pica d'Estats. Carlit in Cerdagne. The wildness and solitude are unmatched among the three great Pyrenean crossings.
A bit of history
Conceived in the 1960s by mountaineer and hiker Georges Veron, the HRP was popularised by his book "Pyrénées par la haute route" (1974). It has no continuous official waymarking but follows the logic of staying on or very close to the watershed line. Several guidebooks and GPS tracks now exist to guide hikers along it.
Getting there
Departure from Hendaye (TGV station, 5h from Paris). Arrival at Banyuls-sur-Mer (TER train from Perpignan). Spanish (CAF/FOM) and French refuges line the route. Some sections require carrying 2-3 days of food.
Recommended gear
Lightweight crampons and an ice axe recommended early in the season (June). IGN 1:25,000 map essential. GPS strongly advised. A lightweight tent is useful for sections without refuges. First-aid kit. High-technical mountain boots.
Best season
Mid-July to mid-September only. High-altitude passages are snowbound before July. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible throughout summer. Self-sufficiency sometimes needed for 2-3 consecutive days.
