The place

The Tour des Combins is a multi-day circuit through the Pennine Alps that loops around the Grand Combin massif, crossing between Switzerland's Val de Bagnes/Entremont and Italy's Aosta Valley via the Fenêtre de Durand and the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass. Hikers overnight in a chain of alpine huts connected by high passes, the highest being the Col des Otanes at close to 2,880m. It is a quieter, more rugged alternative to the Tour du Mont Blanc, with some optional variants involving exposed or equipped terrain.
