A bit of history
Opened in 1984, the Southern Upland Way was Scotland's first official coast-to-coast long-distance footpath. It runs through countryside rich in Covenanting history (17th-century religious conflicts) and passes near the birthplace of John Macadam, inventor of macadamised roads.
Getting there
Portpatrick: bus from Stranraer (15 min), then train to Glasgow (2h30). Cockburnspath: bus to Berwick-upon-Tweed (30 min), then train. Remote — pre-arrange transport from Cockburnspath.
Recommended gear
Waterproof boots. Gaiters. Full waterproofs. OS maps and compass (some remote stages). Tent recommended for flexibility.
Best season
April to October. September–October less busy and often good weather. July–August midges in wooded areas.
