Why go
Triglav (2,864 m) – the only Slovenian mountain above 2,800 m and a symbol of Slovenian identity. Triglav National Park (potential UNESCO value). Kokra Saddle. Kamnik Saddle. The Karst and Lipica. The Adriatic Sea and Ankaran.
A bit of history
The SPP was established in 1953 by the Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS) to mark the 60th anniversary of organized alpine activity in Slovenia. The trail was officially opened in July 1953 and has since been one of the most significant achievements of the Slovenian mountaineering movement.
Getting there
Maribor: train from Ljubljana (1h30) or Graz (50 min). Ankaran: bus from Koper (20 min). Ljubljana – international airport.
Recommended gear
High mountain boots. Climbing gear for Triglav (helmet, gloves). Ice axe and crampons early in the season. Weatherproof clothing.
Best season
July to September for the high-mountain stages. Lower sections from May to October. Triglav is dangerous before July and after the end of September.
