long-distance trail in Germany
Why go
Celtic ring fort of Otzenhausen. Ramstein Castle. Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. Idarwald with its Idarkopf geology. Bingen and the Loreley gorge on the Rhine.
A bit of history
The Hunsrück is one of the oldest inhabited landscapes in Central Europe: Hallstatt and La Tène cultures (Celtic ring forts, burial mounds) are found throughout. In the Middle Ages, nobles and monasteries dominated the region. The trail follows historic pack-animal paths and trade routes.
Getting there
Perl: bus from Trier (1h30). Bingen am Rhein: train station (Frankfurt 1h, Koblenz 30 min). Well served by rail at the starting points.
Recommended gear
Hiking boots with ankle support. Rain gear. Kompass hiking map of the Hunsrück.
Best season
April to October. Spring (cherry blossom in the Moselle valley) and autumn (grape harvest) are especially beautiful.
