The place

The Fishermen's Trail follows the original paths used by local fishermen to reach the Atlantic cliffs and coves of the Alentejo and western Algarve coasts, largely within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park. Roughly 60-70% of the route crosses soft sand — beaches, dune systems, and cliff-top sandy tracks — which the official trail association flags as more tiring than the flat elevation profile suggests. The trail crosses the Seixe River at Odeceixe, the historic boundary between the Alentejo and Algarve regions, and passes fortified coastal points including the Cape Sardão lighthouse and the Arrifana Ribat ruins.
