The place
The GR®5 Vosges section links Wissembourg (on the Alsace border) to Cernay (Haut-Rhin) over roughly 220 km, crossing the Vosges ridge from east to west through forests typical of fir and beech trees. The route follows the Route des Crêtes, passes the finest Vosges summits (Ballon d'Alsace, Grand Ballon at 1,424 m), crosses vineyards, and links picturesque Alsatian villages. There is little sharp elevation change (the massif is plateau-like), and waymarking is a spotless red and white. Ideal for a first multi-day hike in France, suitable for all hikers.
