A bit of history
In the Austrian Alpine Club's (ÖAV) system of long-distance trails, Route 07 was laid out as a north-south axis. The route follows one of the historic main traffic axes of the Habsburg Empire, which connected Vienna to the Adriatic Sea.
Getting there
Northern starting point: bus from Linz or Passau. Southern end point: coastal towns with bus/ferry connections. Vienna: central reference point.
Recommended gear
Alpine gear for the mountain stages. Alternating tent and hut overnights. GPS and map.
Best season
June to September. Adriatic sections also possible in October–November.
