The place

The Magyar Zarándokút (Hungarian Pilgrim Way) leads from Budapest to Pannonhalma, over roughly 300 km and 12–15 stages, through the hills and forests of Transdanubia. The route connects to the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) network and links Hungary's most important medieval pilgrimage sites: from the Elizabeth Church in Budapest to the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma (UNESCO). The route is characterized by gentle hills, wine regions (Tokaj, Eger, Badacsony), churches and castles.

Why go

Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma (UNESCO). Esztergom and its basilica. Visegrád and the ruins of the medieval palace. Tihany and Lake Balaton. The volcanic basalt cones of Badacsony.

A bit of history

The Magyar Zarándokút was established in the early 2000s, as part of the Spanish Camino's European network. The Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma (founded in 996) is Hungary's oldest monastery, founded by King Stephen I after the adoption of Christianity.

Getting there

Budapest: international airport. Pannonhalma: bus from Győr (30 minutes), train from Budapest (1h30).

Recommended gear

Lightweight hiking shoes. Rain jacket. Sunscreen. Pilgrim's passport for accommodation.
