Gästrikeleden
The place
Gästrikeleden is a hiking trail that runs 20 mil (200 km) from Gävle on the Bothnian Sea to Uppsala, following the Dalälven river and passing through the forests and lakes of Gästrikland and Uppland. The trail crosses dense conifer forest, open bogland, historic ironworking villages and shoreline meadows. It offers opportunities for swimming, fishing and camping along its full length, is well marked, and has regularly spaced rest cabins.

A bit of history
Gästrikeleden was established by local outdoor associations in the 1980s to link the port town of Gävle with the historic university town of Uppsala and showcase the natural beauty of a region long known for its iron and steel production.
Getting there
Gävle: commuter train from Stockholm (1h20). Uppsala: commuter train/SJ from Stockholm (40 min). Both towns are well connected by rail.
Recommended gear
Waterproof hiking boots. Rain gear. Insect repellent (summer months). Tent gear if you plan to camp.
Best season
May to October. Summer brings long days and good swimming weather. Autumn offers beautiful foliage colours. Winter offers cross-country ski tracks.
