The place

European long-distance hiking trail

Why go

Rome (starting point). Cilento coast and Paestum temples (UNESCO). Pollino National Park (Europe's largest national park). Cosenza medieval old town. Aspromonte and its Calabrian pine forests. Reggio Calabria and Riace bronzes.

A bit of history

The Apennines have been traversed since antiquity on Roman consular roads (Via Appia, Via Latina) and medieval pilgrimage routes (Via Francigena). The Magna Graecia settlements (Paestum, Sybaris) along and near the route date from the 8th century BC. The E1 connects with the E1 section arriving from Switzerland and the Alps further north.

Getting there

Rome: major international hub. Reggio Calabria: airport and train from Naples (3h30). The Apennine section uses trains and buses between major towns.

Recommended gear

Hiking boots. Water (Apennine sections can be dry in summer). Sun protection. Basic Italian helpful.

Best season

March to May and September to November. Summer very hot on southern sections.
