European Long distance path E1 - Norway, Nordland (south)
The place
The E1 Nordland South section covers the southern part of Nordland county in Norway, from Bodø (just above the Arctic Circle) south to Mo i Rana, approximately 300 km over 15–20 stages through dramatic fjord and mountain terrain. The route crosses the Saltfjellet plateau (some sections above 1,500 m), the Svartisen glacier complex (Norway's second largest icefield) and the Helgeland coast with its thousands of islands. This is Norway's most dramatic middle section of the E1.

A bit of history
The Arctic Circle (Polarsirkelen) crosses this section of Nordland. The Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park was established in 1989 to protect this wilderness of glaciers, birch forests and river valleys. The historic Nordlandsruta was a winter supply route used by Norwegian communities isolated by snow and ice.
Getting there
Bodø: airport (flights from Oslo 1h20, Bergen 1h). Mo i Rana: airport and train (Oslo 11h, or fly from Oslo 1h10). Nordland coast accessible by Hurtigruten ferry.

Best season
