A bit of history
The Eifelsteig opened in 2009 and received the award for 'Germany's Most Beautiful Hiking Trail' (Wandermagazin) that same year. It connects two of the most significant cities of the former Holy Roman Empire — Aachen (Charlemagne's capital) and Trier (Germany's oldest city, formerly Augusta Treverorum).
Getting there
Aachen: IC/ICE train station (45 min. from Cologne, 1h from Brussels). Trier: IC train station (1h30 from Koblenz, 50 min. from Luxembourg). Well served by train and public transport.
Recommended gear
Hiking boots (mid-height, waterproof). Rain jacket. Poles recommended. Light backpack (35–40 L). No special equipment needed.
Best season
April to November. Spring with blossoms and fresh greenery. Autumn foliage is spectacular. Summer is warm and pleasant. Winter possible, but some accommodations are closed.
