The place

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is a roughly week-long teahouse route in Nepal's Annapurna Conservation Area, climbing through the steep, forested Modi Khola gorge from mid-hill Gurung villages around 1,000-2,000m up to the glacial amphitheater at the foot of Annapurna I and Machapuchare, at 4,130m. Terrace farmland and rhododendron forest in the lower villages give way to dense bamboo and pine through the gorge, then open alpine scree near base camp. It requires no technical climbing but demands sustained daily elevation changes and basic altitude awareness, culminating in a sudden 360-degree amphitheater of 7,000-8,000m peaks around the base camp bowl.
