Andalucía - South Route (Provincia de Granada)
The place
The Andalucia South Route is a long-distance hiking trail traversing the southern coast of Spain from Gibraltar to Almería, approximately 600 km over 28–35 stages, crossing the sierras and coastal ranges of the Costa del Sol hinterland: Sierra Bermeja, Sierra de las Nieves (National Park), Serranía de Ronda, Sierra Nevada foothills and the arid landscapes of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. This route avoids the crowded coast, taking to the mountains for the most diverse scenery in Andalusia.
Why go
Rock of Gibraltar and Barbary macaques. Sierra de las Nieves NP and its pinsapo fir (a unique Tertiary relic). Ronda and its spectacular gorge (Tajo de Ronda). Alhambra visible from the Sierra Nevada foothills. Cabo de Gata desert coast (last true desert in Europe). Tabernas Desert (film location).
A bit of history
Andalusia's southern ranges were the last stronghold of Moorish Spain (the Emirate of Granada fell in 1492). The route traverses landscapes shaped by the unique convivencia of Islamic, Jewish and Christian cultures. Sierra Nevada sheltered the last Morisco communities into the 17th century.
Getting there
Gibraltar: international airport or ferry from Algeciras. Almería: airport (flights from Madrid, Barcelona, UK). Bus connections between major towns along the route.
Recommended gear
Hiking boots. Sun protection (essential). Water (critical in summer — Cabo de Gata desert). Windproof jacket for Sierra Nevada approaches.
Best season
October to May. Spring (March–May) ideal: wildflowers, mild temperatures. Summer extreme (35–40°C). Sierra Nevada sections best June–October.
