Why go
Royal Gorge Bridge and Park (world's highest suspension bridge when built in 1929). Arkansas River whitewater (class IV–V rapids). Sangre de Cristo range with 14ers. Salida's Victorian mining town centre and vibrant arts scene. Hot Springs in the area.
A bit of history
The American Discovery Trail spans the entire United States from Delaware to California — one of the longest recreational trails in the world at 6 800 miles (10 900 km). The Colorado segments were developed in the 1990s–2000s by ADT volunteers and Rocky Mountain hiking clubs, connecting National Forest trails with county roads.
Getting there
Cañon City: car from Colorado Springs (45 min) or Pueblo (30 min). Salida: car from Pueblo (1h30). Limited public transport in rural Colorado.
Recommended gear
Hiking boots. Sun protection (high altitude UV). Hydration system. Bear spray. Layers for temperature swings (can be 30°C during day, 5°C at night at altitude).
Best season
May to October. June–September optimal. Afternoon thunderstorms common July–August at altitude.
